Serra da Estrela, with its tower at 1,993 meters
Is the highest point in mainland Portugal and a true natural and cultural treasure.
This territory encompasses the largest protected area in the country, the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, and the Estrela Geopark, recognized by UNESCO for its exceptional geological and cultural heritage.
Here, nature and history go hand in hand: glacial valleys, lakes, and rocky outcrops coexist with historic schist and granite villages, where traditions are kept alive. Visitors can walk along stunning trails, observe unique fauna and flora, discover the geological formation of the mountain range, and immerse themselves in the richness of the local culture.
More than just a landscape, Estrela is also a water castle, guarding the springs of the Mondego, Alva, and Zêzere rivers. Between granite and schist, it reveals itself as a territory of contrasts, marked by different climates and impressive geodiversity. It is also a living testimony to the last glaciation, which occurred about 30,000 years ago, and preserves rocks dating back 600 million years.
For all these reasons, UNESCO has awarded Serra da Estrela the status of Global Geopark, reinforcing its importance as a place where nature, science, and culture meet.
